SOHH.com is reporting that Paul Wall will be featured in a special documentary on the dark side of the diamond trade, set to air on VH1 in February 2007.
The special (also featuring Raekwon) is currently titled "Bling: A Planet Rock" and includes segments on Sierra Leone. Wall and Raekwon will travel to West Africa to interview people affected by the diamond trade.
The film's aim is to "raise public awareness about the issue [and to] educate viewers about ways they can help end the smuggling of blood diamonds." The action is needed as groups such as Amnesty International and the United Nations say that "Governments, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations, diamond traders, financial institutions, arms manufacturers, social and educational institutions and other civil society players need to combine their efforts, demand the strict enforcement of sanctions and encourage real peace."
While it's important to put forth the action to stop this particular human rights issue, history reminds us of the origins of similar injustices in the past as luxury items of the wealthy are created at the expense of some poor person's life or freedom. Even if the situation in Sierra Leone were to end today, there's no stopping a similar conflict from starting in other countries unless there are reforms in hip hop's bling culture and American prestige symbols.
